Process Development for Automated Sorting and Recycling of Polyolefin from Mixed Plastic Waste

Metal and Recycling company and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

1. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE COMPANY
The Metal & Recycling Company (MRC) is a Kuwaiti pioneer organization managing and recycling the solid waste materials, scrap, surplus and secondary material generated. Our main target and strategy is to sustain and save our environment by decreasing the amount of the landfill material, starting from the company’s belief that even if we are not going to be affected by the landfilled wastes, the next generations will.

2. WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM YOU WERE TRYING TO SOLVE?
The target was to decrease the amount of landfilled plastics by enhancing the company’s sorting techniques to make use of all types of plastics, as MRC believes that plastics take more than 1,000 years to decompose, and there is a potential of pollutants leak into the soil and water.

3. HOW DID KFAS HELP YOU WITH YOUR PROJECT?
KFAS introduced and connected us to the research institute and that was the catalyst of the whole project steps.

4. WHAT WAS THE SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION SOLUTION?
MRC required the testing of new, advanced technology material. The company needed environmental solutions, less consumption of raw materials and more efficient production. It also is searching for ways to increase profitability.

5. WORKING WITH THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE
MRC has worked with Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV with the assistance of SET Technology GmbH as a Liaison. After contacting and meeting with the research institutes, MRC has provided samples of raw materials and products the company has for them to make their studies on the best solutions for enhancing the sorting techniques.

6. PROJECT IMPACT
By decreasing the amount of disposed plastics this will affect the company in two ways:

  1. Direct effect as there will be increments of profitability and productivity.
  2. Indirect effect as this solution would save the environment from the hazard of landfilling the plastic wastes.

7. AS A RESULT OF THIS PROJECT, ARE YOU LIKELY TO INVEST FURTHER IN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT?
Sure, this project and the support of KFAS inspired MRC to invest more in R&D in different production areas such as metal recycling unit.

8. HOW DID YOU FIND ABOUT KFAS AND THE COFUNDING PROGRAM
Since MRC started looking for enhancing the company’s technologies we have looked for Kuwaiti organizations supporters, KFAS is a well-known organization in Kuwait, supporting the progress and advancement of science and technology.

9. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND KFAS PROGRAMS TO OTHER COMPANIES?
MRC will recommend KFAS Enterprise Support & Transfer of Technology Program for any Kuwait Shareholder company in which KFAS is providing different grant sizes to the research projects and also promotes national and international collaborative research which lead to the establishment of outreach activities.
